Greenhill HR makes a donation to Alexander Community Development Transition to Trade

By 4 November 2020No Comments

Alexander Community Development is delighted to receive a donation from Greenhill HR towards our Transition to Trade in March 2021. This cohort will be ACD’s first female only cohort, which launches on International Woman’s Day next year.

Transition to Trade is a positive pathway for young people who want to get into the construction industry. There has been a sharp drop in the number of school and college leavers entering the construction industry, particularly in certain trades and the home building sector.

Some of the factors that contribute to this include:

  • Many are not prepared for the world of work. As a result, employers are reluctant to take them on as they can’t be relied upon on site.
  • Many of them don’t get practical on-site experience during their studies. Consequently, they don’t have the skills to work independently on site.
  • The quality of training they get is variable. While they have qualifications on paper, it doesn’t always translate into good quality technical skills on the job.
  • They aren’t yet equipped to be self-employed so early on in their careers. Therefore, they can’t compete for the construction projects in the same way as experienced self-employed tradespeople.

The launch of the all-female programme in March next year, comes after a clear niche was identified within the market. Currently, woman make up 14% of the construction industry and this number is continuing to rise year on year. Alexander Community Development is committed to creating opportunities for people from all backgrounds, who are interested in gaining a trade however we are excited to pioneer this female only programme.

Aled Bartley-Jones, Project Leader @ ACD – “We are delighted to have received this donation from Greenhill HR towards our first girls-only course. There is huge potential for young woman to build themselves a fantastic career within the trade industry and we are excited to showcase this programme ”

Sandy Wilkie @ Greenhill HR – “I’ve been following John & Kara’s ACD initiative since its inception in Autumn 2019. They are both hard-working, compassionate entrepreneurs. We’re delighted to help support such a great initiative. Now more than ever it’s key to support young people on their early career journey. We’re especially keen to support young women in an industry in which women have been traditionally underrepresented. We look forward to seeing their progress.
